In this talk I will give an overview about the research collaboration between the Freiburg Material Research Center (FMF) and the ANKA Synchrotron of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), which resulted in the formation of a virtual institute BIRD. Recent results of sensor material research and applications of Medipix semiconductor pixel detectors, mainly obtained with Synchrotron radiation, will be presented.
