Abstract: Although MRI and SPECT are nowadays considered routine medical tools their combination includes many technical obstacles. SPECT uses radiopharmaceuticals with short half-life (99mTc) and provides complementary functional information to MRI. This work presents modified experimental MRI-SPECT insert system with detectors Timepix composed of an MR-compatible SPECT setup with CdTe sensors, collimators and RF coil.

Measurements were performed on the multimodal inhomogeneous phantom filled with liquid 99mTc (140.5 keV γ ray; A = 59 MBq) and gelatine standard inside the RF coil by the Bruker BioSpec 47/20 (4.7 T) MR animal scanner. MR images were obtained by RARE sequence with a total duration of 15 minutes per plane. SPECT data were obtained by two CdTe sensors (512 x 256) for each projection. Further the data has been evaluated, reconstructed and fused by SPECT-back projection software to the final 256 x 256 MRI-SPECT image. The insert system was successfully verified for measurements of highly active liquid 99mTc. Results paved the way from prove of principle concept to fully-functional MRI-SPECT prototype.
