Application of micro-CT in different fields of micropaleontology: provenience analysis of medieval arts and ontogenesis of planktonic foraminifera

Abstract:

Provenience analysis of medieval arts

The micro-CT imaging techniques has been applied for recording the maximum amount of paleontological objects from small fragments of ground material (~0.2-0.4 mm3) from medieval arts. The application of this undestructive technique provided enough well determinable microfossils for determination of geological age and paleoenvironmental conditions during deposition of source material. We compared micro-CT images of microfossils from ground material with scanning electron microscope images of microfossils from the possible reference material from traditional mining districts. The comparison helped to designed the most probable source material.  

Ontogenesis of planktonic foraminifera

Irregularities in ontogenic development of planktonic foraminifera may indicate an paleoenvironmental stress what is very important information for reconstruction of paleoceanography evolution of marine basins. From micro-CT images of planktonic foraminifera we defined several types of these malformations. The stress factor causing individual types of deformations has been interpreted from complex dataset of geochemical and paleontological proxies.
