First Di-muon Multivariate Analysis Studies using the ATLAS Forward Proton detectors

Abstract:
A detailed study using Multivariate Analysis (MVA) in combination with Monte Carlo (MC) studies was performed for the first time in Forward Physics. The presented studies use information from the ATLAS Forward Proton (AFP) detectors and the Monte Carlo generated samples, which were explicitly produced for di-muon analysis referring to the 2017 data collected from the AFP detectors. The MVA and the MC studies clearly show a perfect matching and agreement among them, and most importantly, both show that the behavior of the individual productions such as exclusive, single dissociative, double dissociative and Drell-Yan process can be easily distinguished and treated at the AFP detectors. These distinct detector signatures make the understanding and the procedure of the data analysis easier and more manageable, in the context of signal and background identification and where to look for them at the AFP detectors. This kind of studies not only concern Standard Model Physics using the AFP detectors, but can also be applied to any other type of investigation.
