Investigation of scaling laws for a High Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thruster

Tim Brandt

University Greifswald (Germany)

Abstract: Upcoming formation flying missions create unprecedented requirements in low thrust and thrust stability for the purpose of station keeping. One attempt to reach the required regime is to downscale the so-called High Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thruster (HEMPT). Due to its simple design with permanent magnets and direct current, this thruster type seems applicable for downscaling. However, a proper understanding of the thrusters characteristics in the downscaled configuration is necessary to reach the design goals. This talk will present the results of a computer modeling campaign that has the aim of achieving this understanding.
