Screened Relativistic Treatment of Displacement Damage and Space Radiation Environment

Prof. Pier Giorgio Rancoita

Abstract: The space radiation environment remains one of primary challenges and concerns for space exploration, in particular for deep space missions of long duration, i.e., when the combined shield due to Earth magnetosphere and atmosphere vanishes. In the inner heliosphere major sources of radiation are Galactic Cosmic Rays, Solar Particles and Jovian Electrons. Furthermore, in the space nearby Earth, particles (mainly electrons and protons) are trapped within the Van Hallen radiation belts.
These particles populating the space radiation environment induce single event effects and cumulative doses in spacecraft materials and, finally, create electronics hazards.
The qualification of radiation resistant devices for space missions not only requires the understanding of damage mechanisms, but also the knowledge of the local intensities of particles and species. In addition, the expected dose ammounts - deposited via ionization and non-ionization energy loss (NIEL) processes - have to be predicted. The latter mechanism is that one responsible for displacement damages, very relevant for semiconductor devices. Only recently, the screened relativistic (SR) NIEL treatment has allowed a comprehensive calculation of NIEL doses imparted by protons, ions and electrons in materials and compounds.  SR-NIEL treatment is currently embedded in ESA transport codes - like GRAS and MULASSIS - and in GEANT4; it is also avaible in SPENVIS. The experimental results obtained from recent irradiation campaigns regarding triple-, single-junction solar cells, and diodes are supporting the validity of sr-niel treatment for calculating NIEL doses.
