
Muography: Development of a portable detector and Analysis of MURAVES Data

Abstract: Muography is an imaging technique that relies on the measurement of the absorption or scattering of cosmic muons freely and abundantly produced by the interactions of cosmic rays with the atmosphere. It employs the detection, simulation and data analysis methods developed in the context of high energy physics experiments. In this talk, I will focus on two major aspects in the wider research area of muography, the first of which involves the research and development of a portable and gas-tight muon detector based on small area (16cm x 16cm) glass resistive plate chambers (RPCs). The fabrication of the detector was done in-house at UCLouvain, with an aim to operate under challenging operating conditions that are often the case in volcanology, geophysical prospections and in archaeological/cultural studies. The assembly process and the results from the performance studies of the current prototype will be shown. Additionally, the muographic study of Mt. Vesuvius, namely MUon RAdiography of VESuvius (MURAVES) experiment, will be also be discussed including a quick rundown of the absorption muography data analysis procedure and the preliminary density asymmetry results from the data accumulated in 2020-2023.
