Obsah
The charge sharing effect has been investigated in the Medipix2 and Timepix pixel detectors of 300 μm thicknesses exposed to protons and heavier ions, namely alpha-particles, 6Li, 7Li, Carbon and Oxygen ions. Heavy charged particles produce dense carrier tracks in silicon detectors. Under the influence of an electric field, the lateral spread of charge carriers causes a sharing of the charge between pixels giving a signal in cluster of multiple pixels of the Medipix2 and Timepix devices. The cluster size measured as a function of the bias voltage for the protons and heavier charged particles is described by a model accounting for the effects of plasma, diffusion and funneling on the charge collection and charge sharing. A detailed study of the energy deposition distribution can be achieved using a Timepix device. From its time over threshold (TOT) mode of operation, the Timepix device can count the amount of charge being deposited in each pixel element within the cluster and these counts can be translated into energy with a proper calibration. The Timepix device allows one to follow changes in charge collection as a function of collection time and therefore makes possible the estimate of the energy distribution within the clusters - particle tracks. This feature added to the pattern recognition capabilities already available from Medipix, it is possible to measure the amount of a certain type of radiation at a given position. Cluster shapes and sizes measured as a function of the bias voltage for the protons and heavier charged particles incident on the Medipix2 and Timepix devices under different angles are presented and interpreted within a model accounting for the effects of plasma, diffusion and funneling on the charge collection and sharing. In particular, results on angular sensitive response of the devices to particles with different incident angles measured for protons of 10 MeV are also reported.
