Abstract

PHENIX Collaboration at RHIC has recently observed a large excess of the dielectron yield in the central gold-gold collisions and suggested that it might come from a partonic phase. In order to confirm such an origin, all possible hadronic sources have to be ruled out, including those ignored so far. We calculate the dielectron rate resulting from the reactions with three pions in the initial state and compare it to the standard two-pion annihilation rate. The three-pion rate strongly depends on the a1-rho-pi interaction Lagrangian and we discuss the ways how to resolve this ambiguity using the recent results of the SLU/IEAP particle theory group.
