Study of damage zone in high ductile materials in vicinity of crack tip by X-Ray Dynamic Defectoscopy method

As many high performance structures in industry are designed from ductile materials, there exists a need to determine the proper fracture criteria in the range of non-linear and large deformations. Intensive internal material damage, caused by different mechanisms, usually precedes the ductile fracture. Consequent theories require experimental verification of their predictions. Thanks to the grant No. 106/00/D064 supported by GA CR a new and unique experimental method “X Ray Dynamic Defectoscopy (XRDD)” was developed. This technique enables to overcome the obstacles of current approaches providing information about distribution of local variations of material density with micrometric accuracy nondestructively and in real-time. The test sample is illuminated by X-rays during the loading process and transmission images are detected by unique single photon-counting position sensitive X-ray detector Medipix. The proposed method presents a great advance in the ability to observe physical processes occurring in high ductile materials. However, methodical developments namely regarding the accurate interpretation of acquired data from roentgenography images in terms of structural material changes are needed. In methodical meaning, the proposed project will concentrate on the optimization of parameters of the experimental setup and off-line processing. These tasks aim at improving the accuracy and resolution of XRDD. As an advanced goal we propose to exploit tomography principles in order to obtain a three dimensional distribution variation of damage zone.
