Abstract
Laboratory exercises have an essential position in physics education as well as in education of other natural sciences, because it enables students to connect theoretical bases of knowledge with real world situations. In nuclear physics, the design of laboratory exercises is not straightforward. Information about the microworld can be reached just vicariously via different types of detectors. The quality of the information (and its educational potential) about the given subject of the microworld is directly dependent on the quality of the detector used. Hybrid semiconductor pixel detectors of the Medipix/Timepix type are a unique systems developed in frame of the Medipix CERN collaboration. The detector offers a unique operation principle – so called single particle counting with high spatial resolution, high detection efficiency, energy resolution, and digital and on-line visualization of the measured data. Furthermore, thank to advanced USB readout interfaces, the detector can be operated in a user friendly way practically everywhere by just using a standard notebook. All this advantages open till now wholly new educational possibilities. The goal of this project is to utilize the Medipix/Timepix detectors for a series of laboratory exercises for practical education of the physics of the microworld. In frame of this thesis, a short review describing the Medipix/Timepix type detectors to help introduce them to students and their supervisors for the measurements is provided. It has been also demonstrated the main application areas of this systems which forms the basis for the realization of the individual exercises. The main results of this work consist of assignment of five laboratory exercises. The first three exercises are devoted to the visualization and study of the properties of the ionization radiation, the rest of the exercises deal with X-ray radiography. In the final part of this work it can be found exemplary solutions of one assignment.
