ATLAS inner detector

Our group is involved in development of the ATLAS Inner Detector tracker. This device is made out of three detector types, moving inside out we find:

a) the silicon Pixel detector
b) the SemiConductor Tracker (SCT), and
c) the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT)

all these detectors allow precision measurement of charged particles trajectories in the environment of numerous tracks, but the Pixel contributes mainly to accurately measure vertices, the SCT to precisely measure the particle momenta and the TRT to ease the pattern recognition with its very large number of close hits (while also contributing to electron identification). The figure illustrates the layout and shows that each detector consists of barrel and endcap regions in order to minimize the material traversed by particles coming from the interaction vertex.

Development of ATLAS Inner detector is closely linked to other activities in our institute:
- Design of ATLAS shielding,
- Tests of ATLAS SCT modules,
- 3D SCT detectors for ATLAS upgrade,
- Network of radiation monitors for ATLAS based on Medipix device.
