Abstract
Recent advances in semiconductor technology allow to construct highly efficient and low noise pixel detectors of ionizing radiation. Steadily improving quality of front end electronics enables fast digital signal processing in each pixel which offers recording of more complete information about each detected quantum (energy, time, number of particles). All these features improve an extend applicability of pixel technology in different fields. Some applications of pixel technology especially for imaging in life sciences will be shown (energy and phase sensitive X-ray radiography and tomography, SPECT, neutron radiography, etc). The X-ray radiography of small biological samples consisting of soft tissue is particularly difficult due to low differences in X-ray attenuation. The X-ray imaging detectors like Medipix2 with unlimited dynamic range allow to reach good contrast and, in combination with advanced point like X-ray sources, it is possible to refine spatial resolution of the method below 1m. The semiconductor pixel detector TimePix (256x256 pixels with a pitch of 55 um) is a newly developed successor of the Medipix2 device. Each Timepix pixel can be operated in Time-over-Threshold mode allowing direct energy measurement. The possibility of per pixel energy measurement presents a substantial advantage for X-ray radiography with polychromatic X-ray sources (tubes) allowing material identification (colour X-ray radiography) via analysis of transmission energy spectra.
