Bone Health in Space: X-ray Imaging Tools for Bone Densitometry Assessment
Laura Antonia Cerbone
Scuola Superiore Meridionale, Naples, Italy
Abstract:
Long-duration space missions expose astronauts to significant bone loss, especially in weight-bearing skeletal regions. To address this issue, X-ray-based technologies such as DXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) and HR-pQCT are used to assess bone health before and after missions—but in-flight monitoring remains a challenge.
This seminar presents recent advancements in compact DXA and HR-pQCT systems design for space applications (DXA4A and ASTRO-QCT projects), supported by GPU-accelerated Monte Carlo simulations for dosimetry and image quality assessment.
Seminar takes place on Tuesday, May 13th 2025 at 10:00 AM
in the IEAP meeting room, Praha 1, Husova 240/5.
